Chemical Peeling : It is the application of a chemical agent to the skin so as to cause controlled destruction of a part of the skin followed by subsequent resurfacing, remodeling and repair. Thus it causes the skin to exfoliate or peel off and a new skin which is smooth, shiny and healthy regrows.

They can be superficial depth, medium depth or deep peels. Commonly used peels are glycolic acid, salicylic acid and trichloroacetic acid.

Depending on the problem the skin is assessed and primed with some creams 2-3 weeks before a chemical peel. The procedure may last for 10-15 minutes depending on the peel. Patients experience mild tingling sensation during the procedure. In some cases skin can peel or blisters can appear for few days post procedure. A sunscreen has to be used and sun exposure has to be avoided following the peel. Rare side effects include pigmentation and allergic reactions to the peel.

Chemical peels can be used to treat facial pigmentation, acne, black heads and white heads, acne scars , wrinkles and fine lines , peri orbital pigmentation and for skin rejuvenation for dull or aged skin.
